THE CORE PROCESS

Don't memorise ratios.
Learn how to investigate.

The workshop starts with a real fund and works through the evidence step by step. Value Research is used as the primary research interface during the live session.

01DataFind the information that matters.
02QuestionKnow what each number is helping us investigate.
03ComparisonPut performance and risk into context.
04InterpretationUnderstand what the evidence is saying.
05ConclusionReach a structured research conclusion.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

One fund.
End-to-end analysis.

You will follow one real fund from identity through performance, consistency, risk, portfolio, management and cost, while recording the evidence in a Fund Research Sheet.

01 — IDENTIFY

Know the fund

Category, mandate, benchmark, age, AUM and manager.

02 — PERFORMANCE

What has it delivered?

Relevant returns and comparison with the right benchmark and category.

03 — CONSISTENCY

Does it keep delivering?

Look beyond point-to-point returns and examine behaviour across periods.

04 — RISK

What did investors live through?

Volatility, drawdown, downside behaviour and risk-adjusted measures.

05 — PORTFOLIO

What drove the result?

Holdings, concentration, sectors, market cap, style and changes.

06 — MANAGEMENT

Who and how?

Manager history, process observations and relevant changes.

07 — COST

What does it cost?

TER, expense ratio and relevant plan differences.

08 — VERDICT

Can we explain the result?

Write a short research summary, evidence and reassessment triggers.

Every number must answer a question. The goal is not to blindly follow a rating or ranking. The website supplies evidence; you learn how to interpret the evidence.
WHAT YOU WALK AWAY WITH

A repeatable
research process.

By the end of the session, you should be able to take an unfamiliar mutual fund and investigate it using a structured sequence rather than a collection of disconnected ratios.

Fund Research Sheet

  • Identity and mandate
  • Performance and consistency evidence
  • Risk and risk-adjusted measures
  • Benchmark comparison
  • Portfolio and management observations
  • Cost and conclusion

Structured conclusion

  • What is working?
  • What is not working?
  • What explains the result?
  • What are the major risks?
  • What could change the view?
  • Evidence-backed analytical conclusion
The case-study conclusion is an analytical conclusion about the fund being studied. It is not automatically a personalised recommendation for every participant.
